New Year, New Sew

2018 is already in full swing in the Ross household. Personally, January and February are my least favorite months in Tennessee due to the cold and rain and the ever looming threat of ice on the roads. Schools close down here for the slightest of flurries, so I am dreaming of March and warmer weather. Sign ups have already been completed for Spring T-ball and summer swim lessons. Now we wait….

In the meantime, my wardrobe has a huge hole in it. Over the past couple of winters I have only made two hoodies. Only 2??? I lived in sweatshirts in high school and college so this is an atrocity to me. Patterns for Pirates Relaxed Raglan has been my go to for a hoodie pattern due to the loose fit and different hood options. However, I have been eying the Halifax Hoodie from Hey June for quite a while. I grabbed the pattern finally during her last sale, and now I can’t believe I waited so long.

So for this month’s “New Sews for the New Year” Blog Tour (Sewing by Ti Blog Tours), I bring you my new favorite hoodies.

This Halifax is View D in french terry from Raspberry Creek Fabrics. The floral stripes is from their Club fabric line and the burgundy was a coordinating solid from their knit apparel fabrics.

I fell in love with the floral the first time I saw it, and then it took me 3 months to cut into it.

Back to the pattern. View D has a regular loose fitting body with a front pocket and cuff hems. The cowl neck just might be my favorite part though. The wide cowl with the optional drawstring is a great alternative to your typical hood.

I made the ties out of the coordinating fabric, but I put the loops of the french terry to the outside.

Sometimes I sew the most basic options of garments for the sake of time, but I usually end up regretting it. This is especially true when it comes to pockets. Then I go to put my phones or keys into my non-existent pockets and immediately hate myself for taking short cuts. So the kangaroo pocket was a no brainer.

Finally, can we talk about the length of the top? Perfect.

So, there she is. The first of many Halifax Hoodies.

And three days later, I made my second Halifax Hoodie. Can’t stop. Won’t stop.

This time I went with View E, which is a high low hem with a twisted side seam (per pattern description).

Now I love the length of my floral version, but this high low hem is perfection.

It hugs my backside just right!

Pretty much obsessed with this one.

View E uses the same great cowl neckline as View D. The cowl pattern piece is unlike any cowl pattern I have used before, and it works perfectly.

The fabric for this version is a big looped french terry solid from Hobby Lobby.

For the cord on the cowl, I once again reversed the fabric to put the loops on the outside. I did have to make this cord a little wider than the pattern piece to be able to turn the cord right side out after constructing it.

For this version I decided to add the thumbhole cuffs from Hey June’s Lane Raglan. And of course, I forgot to take good pictures of the cuffs. So this is the best you get.

So there are still 3 more versions of the Halifax left for me to try. Whew. I am going to be busy.

There you have it. What a great way to start a new year by sewing this first time for me pattern.

Be sure to check out the rest of the tour this month to see what’s new for the blogging ladies of the sewing world.

I totally agree with you about hi-low hems being where it’s at – plenty of rear coverage, but without causing stump-legs from the front. When I was thinking about my 2018 sewing, I started considering the possibility of putting hi-low or shirttail hems on every top I make. Would that be too much of a good thing? 😉

    Belated Happy New Year!
